A doula provides physical, emotional and informed choice support in prenatal care, during childbirth, and in the post-partum period.
YOU can have a beautiful birth experience when you overcome fears and manage pain by approaching the challenging journey of childbirth in a peaceful and graceful manner.
Pregnancy, childbirth and the period following the arrival of a new baby is an equally exciting and overwhelming time. Traditionally, women relied on close knit families and communities for support as they transitioned through pregnancy and childbirth.
With our ever increasing pace of life and the change in the role of communities in our modern society, having the support of someone trained in pregnancy, labour and post-partum care can significantly improve a women's birth experience.
A doula is an experienced, non-medical assistant who provides physical, emotional and informed choice support in prenatal care, during childbirth and during the post-partum period.
Women have complex needs during childbirth. In addition to the safety of modern obstetrical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent and continuous reassurance, comfort, respect and encouragement. They need individualized care based on their circumstances and preferences. To this end, a doula is present at the birth and works with a woman and her family, physicians, midwives and nurses with an aim to enhance communication and understanding.
"I believe the important qualities of a good doula are compassion, understanding, trust, and a belief that birth is an empowering event.
Because a doula is a neutral observer she can assist you in holding to your vision while at the same time be flexible to the changing situations that each unique birth presents."
- Kara Lister, IHI doula
With a doula present, the pressure on the partner is decreased, allowing participation at an optimum comfort level and increasing the enjoyment of the birth of the baby. Ideally, the doula and the partner make the perfect support team for the woman, complementing each other's strengths.
Studies indicate that when a doula is present, labours tend to be shorter with less need for technical aid and with greater maternal satisfaction.
Birth is a powerful process and likely one of the most significant experiences a women will encounter in her life. Following the birth, doulas help foster a more relaxed post-partum environment as well as enhance early mother and infant relationships, breast feeding and family adjustments.
