Intravenous Micronutrient Therapy

As Naturopathic Doctors we are entrusted by our patients to encourage their body to function optimally and support the natural healing capacities of the body.  We do this through the use of various natural therapies – dietary changes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, botanical medicines, homeopathic remedies and acupuncture and manual therapies.

Unfortunately, in some people they are unable to absorb nutrients appropriately, or they have high nutrient needs that are impossible to obtain through diet or supplements alone.  In these instances Naturopathic Doctors may suggest intravenous micronutrient therapy (IVMT).

Intravenous Micronutrient Therapy

IVMT is the administration of nutrients into the bloodstream.  Vitamins and water-soluble minerals that your body requires for energy production, immune health and optimal functioning are delivered directly to the bloodstream and transported to the cells where they are used to restore health.

Benefits of IVMT

Nutrients are usually absorbed in our digestive tract from food and supplements taken orally.  However, the absorption of nutrients can be hindered by a number of variables – poor nutrient density of food, inflammation in the digestive tract or inadequate enzyme or acid production in the digestive tract.  Additionally, some disease states have requirements for nutrients that exceed that which can be obtained orally.

Increasing blood levels of nutrients through oral supplementation often has significant negative side effects, most commonly digestive upset, constipation, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.  Intravenous therapy is an effective way to increase blood levels of nutrients without negative side effects.

Conditions IVMT Can Benefit

There are a number of conditions that respond well to intravenous therapies.  Your Naturopathic Doctor can customize an intravenous infusion that will address your individual imbalances and help you reach your personal health goals.

One common IVMT is the “Myers’ Cocktail”.  This infusion contains a specially balanced combination of B vitamins, vitamin C, and water-soluble minerals and has been used for decades to address a variety of health concerns.  The Myers’ Cocktail has been found to be an effective treatment option for:

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Depression, anxiety and stress
  • Migraine headaches
  • Tension headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Athletic recovery
  • Acute viruses – common cold and influenza
  • Seasonal allergies and sinusitis
  • Arthritis and chronic pain

Side Effects of IVMT

Naturopathic Doctors who utilize intravenous therapies in their practice must complete additional training and rigorous examinations prior to receiving a license to practice IV therapy.  IVMT is a very safe therapy with minimal side effects.  The most common side effect is irritation at the injection site.  Some patients may experience low blood pressure or lightheadedness after the treatment, but these typically last only a few minutes.  A taste of vitamins in the mouth is non uncommon but this diminishes quickly after the treatment.
